The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will hold the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2007 on 18th May, 2008 for recruitment the 671 posts of Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and certain other Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’ Central Services / Posts.

  Combined Engineering Services Examination (CESE):
 

The Combined Engineering Services Examination is held once a year generally in the month of June/July. Combined Engineering Services Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India. The UPSC conducts the Combined Engineering Services Examination for recruitment of engineers to the four categories of Engineering Services:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering

Engineers selected through the Combined Engineering Services Examination are appointed to various posts in governmental organizations like the Indian Railways, Central Engineering Service, Survey of India, Indian Ordnance Factories Service (Engineering Branch), Military Engineer Services, Indian Telecommunication Service, Central Power Engineering Service, Central Water Engineering Service etc.

Eligibility:

  • Age: The minimum age is 21 years and maximum age is 30 years on August 1 of the year of the examination.

  • Minimum Educational Qualification: Recognised degree in Engineering. However a M. Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject is required for the posts of Engineer, Group 'A' in Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing /Monitoring Organisation, Ministry of Communications and Indian Broadcasting (Engineers) Service.

Application Details of the Combined Engineering Services Examination:

Notifications regarding the Combined Engineering Services Examination are published every year in the month of December / January in the Employment News and other leading newspapers of India. Application Forms along with the Information Brochure can be obtained from the designated Head Post Offices / Post Offices throughout the country on payment of Rs. 100/- only. Candidates are required to mail the duly filled in Application Forms to the Secretary, Union Public Service Commission before the specified date for submission.

Pattern:

The Standard of paper in General Ability Test will be such as may be expected of an Engineering / Science Graduate. The standard of papers in other subjects will be approximately that of an Engineering Degree Examination of an Indian University. There will be no practical examination in any of the subjects. Basically, General Ability Test contains:

  • (Part – A): General English
    The question paper in General English will be designed to test the candidate's understanding of English and use of words.

  • (Part – B): General Studies
    The paper in General Studies will include knowledge of current events and of such matters as of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person. The paper will also include questions on History of India and Geography of a nature which candidates should be able to answer without special study.

Selection Procedure for Combined Engineering Services Examination:

The selection procedure for the Combined Engineering Services Examination comprises two stages:

  • A Written Examination comprising of two sections carrying a total marks of 1000. Section 1 comprises of objective type questions on topics like General English, General Studies and the relevant engineering disciplines of the candidates. Section 2 contains detailed questions only on the disciplines studied by the candidates. The standard of questions asked in the General Ability Test will be as may be expected of an Engineering/ Science Graduate. Questions in Section 2 will be of the graduation standard in Engineering.
  • Successful candidates in the Written Examination are required to appear for an Interview and Personality Test, which is the final stage of selection. This Test carries a maximum of 200 marks.
